These cities are in danger
The situation in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune as well as Greater Ahmedabad, Greater Hyderabad, Greater Jaipur and Greater Lucknow is worrying. In fact, according to a new report by the Delhi-based think tank Center for Science and Environment (CSE), the level of ozone pollution in these Indian cities has increased alarmingly. Especially during this year’s summer, the level of ozone gas at ground level has increased significantly in 20 major urban areas of India. Due to this, the air in these areas has become more poisonous than before. Delhi has been the most affected among all these cities.
Ozone levels higher than normal
According to the new report of CSE, the level of ozone gas has been higher than normal in all 10 big cities including Delhi NCR. While the ground-level ozone gas level remained higher than normal for 176 days in Delhi-NCR, the same situation prevailed for 138 days in Mumbai and Pune. The level of ozone gas was abnormal for 126 days in Jaipur, 86 in Hyderabad, 63 in Kolkata, 59 in Bengaluru, 49 in Lucknow and 41 days in Ahmedabad. Whereas, the number of such days was recorded to be the lowest in Chennai, which is about 9 days.
This year the problem got worse
This new CSE report also reveals that the growing problem of ozone pollution in the year 2024 has increased much more than the problem created in the summer of 2020 during the lockdown. Today the situation is that the problem of increasing pollution is no longer limited to big cities, but small cities are also facing this problem of increasing pollution. According to this CSE report, this year the ozone level was higher in 7 out of 10 cities for more days than last year. The biggest jump has been in a small city like Ahmedabad, where ozone has increased by 4,000 percent. Whereas, Pune recorded an increase of 500 percent, Jaipur 152 percent and Hyderabad 115 percent.
